Hack controversy (conclusion)

Getting back to the earlier article from today about the nasty hack "modpack" (TBH I don't know how to call it - illegal mod? hack? does it matter?). Those who condemned me for posting it with righteous fury and those who were afraid that tomorrow the battlefields of World of Tanks will be swamped with thousands of cheaters, you can reast easy tonight.

It doesn't work.

Well, at least not anymore, that's what I got reported from several sources. Apparently, it was some sort of limited edition, a beta of sorts, with limited access. Which is good, it gives Wargaming time to deal with this shit. So you guys in the German "Fragen zum WoT - "Blog-der-nicht-genannt-werden-darf"" thread can stop getting upset over the evil Silentstalker posting omghax and whatnot.

Personally (and I know I will piss a lot of you off with this), if I was a WG developer, the first thing I'd do would be to disable all mods until this can be contained. But I am no programmer, not sure it would even help (what the hell is dll injection anyway?).

Well, let's hope Wargaming contains this. I'd hate to make more posts about hacks in game.

    1. WG should implement it, but they won't so too bad.

You can work around a little though, if you have a tank with a slow moving howizter at high range (tank guns also have range limits), you can enable auto aim (or target their tank from zoomed out view - this is why WG dislikes the zoom mod among other things) and lob shoot them over a small hill or slope.

But this way you are limited to game engine's limitation in rendering distance aka 1kmx1km box centered at player.

  4. From that 4chan thread i gathered that there were 1400 test keys.

Gratz, you helped them fill out positions quickly :D

I'm not mocking you, the only way to make WG do something is to make problem overblown out of proportions. That 83mm shell fiasco was a good showcase of WGs stance and nice lesson how to deal with WGs lazyness.

    Keep on bloggin.

  6. A similar process has happened in other games, the guy who makes the cheat/hack distributes it to a small number of people, this creates a lot of chatter but preserves the hack. Now he has made some news he makes his money, a third party will buy the hack and start selling it for $25, today was just the publicity phase.

    1. I wonder how dumb people can be.
They expect someone buy their 'product' for 25$ to get soon a permanent ban?(since wg confirmed that they're working/will work on a program/script that will check the client's files for banned mods)

      Delete
    2. Well, it's a bit more complicated than just checking for Client files, since the "warpack" doesn't alter any client files. It's most probably some kind of runtime injection, like many trainers for other games employ.

      Delete
    3. @Alex most people are incredibly dumb, here's an example: wow glider the maker got very very rich, that was being sold for $25 a pop, according to the lawsuit he sold more 100,000 downloads of that boting program.

  8. The beta key(s) (there's no activation, so it might just be one key usable for multiple installations) work until May 4th. There is a good chance that they will release it commercially after that, unless WG figures out a way to block it. Anyway, the next 2 days playing might feel a bit awkward.

    1. Yes, our modpack creator will be releasing those commercially. 10$/month.

  9. DLL injection is a method to e.g. allow hacker code to run sort of between the game and the operating system, say DirectX. This way, when the game renders something, say a tank, the hacker code gets direct access to the 3D position of said tank, which can be used for example to calculate the necessary aiming direction, which can then be fed back to the game by simulating mouse movements (a few methods exist for that too). With all that data available, you can surely image almost any sort of automated functionality is possible given enough time to program it. And 130k botter times 25 euros per botter pays for quite a lot of programmer hours, although I'll be the last to believe all of that money would go back into further development of the bot software...

    Good ur not ;)
Those hacks are seperate from the normal mod section (they dont use it). They hook the wot.exe and dlls.
So deactivating the mod interface wont improve the situation... it would just upset the players...

    2. There is no real solution to this problem. It is how most of backdoor work and neither antivirus company nor Microsoft did find a solution for the moment.

By the way, I agree with this "full disclosure" behavior.

      Delete
  11. I could not agree more with you, you can find similarities in EU supertesters case, and this illegal mods case. To put it simple: WG offers something to players (eu supertest=ability to mod the game) ---> ppl cant respect that cause they are greedy monkeys (leaks=hacks) ---> disable all that crap.

    ReplyDelete

    1. You couldn't be more wrong. This is not something that can be achieved by exploiting the mod Interface. Removing the mod interface would do nothing but upset the players.

  12. To be honest, I think it's a good idea that you posted it, with the official link too. It's the only way to raise awareness against such things, and the only way WG would care to fix it ( as you can recall with the HE shell fiasco of the 8.3 ).

Keep doing what you're doing and don't let others influence how you deal with your blog.

    Cheers!

  15. Those mods "hacks" you posted are old as shit and have even been aknowledged by WG and people warned, they will be banned if they are using them.

Oh and you forgot another "hax" the 3rd models hitskin for tanks. Here is my overview :

    - smart modified autoaim, that can track a target behind obla bla bullshit----OLD!!
    - automatic fire extinguisher/repair, a script that triggers the repair/extinguish automatically as soon as it happens--- OLD AND WG AWARE
    - removes any aim circle jerking (contrary to he official version, there is no jerk even when you get rammed)----never heard of it.
    - counterarty hack that puts a red dot on the spot enemy arty just fired from--OLD
    - sixth sense mod that replaces the perk (if you don't have it), it shows you not only you are targetted but also who's targetting you--OLD
    - artymode for tanks and TDs, snipermode for arty (with the artymode you can fire HE shells accross the map with a regular tank)---OLD AS SHIT. Comes with free cam mod.
    - tracerhack (visible tracers)---OLD
    - a mod showing on minimap where trees fell or buildings got destroyed ("ideal for field commanders")--never heard of it
    - a mod that removes ALL vegetation in sniper mode---this is so OLD its since beta.
    - laser pointer mod---OLD as shit again.

Half of these were posted by SerB himself and told nubs not to use them, if they want their account in good standing.

These are the main reasons WG wants to restrict some mods bla bla. Overlord made a post about it awhile ago.

I cant believe what my eyes just saw in that 10 or 15 Games... I was very shocked and i hope, all users, who are using this Mod will be Banned permanently!!! If uu use this Mod, u dont have any Fun on WoT, cause u know all important Data, whats neccessary to win!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Banning all mods wouldnt be solution. It would be just easy way not to deal with the problem. The reason why people use mods (not hacks) is that game isnt enough good without those things.

I would like that WG would include gun fire flash/smoke after every shot no matter do you actually spot that enemy or not, it would be logical. Atleast it would remove these idiotical situation where one team fires 100 shots and still nobody knows where those shots came. So it would give you, a general idea where to shoot back, but current system is too hard to do that. In beta times I could kill enemies like that, because shell tracers were always seen(but some idiot cheaters had to make those tracers esier to detect, thats why they change that). But nowdays its very hard to kill anyone like that.

    1. To be pedantic all mods are hacks, it's a question of what is fair and what is cheating.

When I first used OTM I couldn't believe it was allowed, being able to see everyone's health all the time and exactly what damage they were taking. WG's reaction to that - include it in the game.

Do you also think that newspapers should not write about tax evading, financial scums and so on?

      Delete
    6. At least I don't believe that WG can "fix" this within a few days. It takes many weeks, even months to develop an anti-cheat system. Judging by their answers and awareness on the matter, they have already been working on such a system long before this discussion even came up.

So posting these hacks only spreads their use before the anti-cheat system is ready to be implemented.

  26. Tried it on a throwaway account I made with that "starter" promo code from a while ago, and the "hacks" in it work quite effectively. The auto-lead when you have a tank targeted with auto-aim worked amazingly well to my surprise. It looks like a injector to me, all WG would need to do would implement a EXE and DLL checker, either to prevent you from playing with them modified or send flags when it senses something to prompt investigation. I'm all for script kiddies would can't make their own stuff getting banned en masse.

as about it it goes on that u can call the the name of this Blog but we do it in our way as it is something sarcasm bout the WG behaviour in Europe.
Up to this point there start and ongoing an discussion bout SS Ban on the Forums and how other WG Forums (SEA, NA) handle it. So then it well, there is just a discussion bout old things already happend and cant be changed anymore by any side.

      So at this point:

Thx SilentStalker for ur work. We still need it, and we all realy like ur hard work on translation.

Second, nice to know u can German, so if I would get a Post on ur Blog I can hopefully bring it to u in two versions that u fully can make proper english on a text. ;) :D
