Soundtrack and Voiceover

Hello everyone,

as you might have heard, Russian WoT client recieved a special voiceover, made by Russian popular actors (sorry, I have no idea who they are and I have most likely never seen any movie with them). With that in mind, I have a few questions for you, my dear readers.

Just a quick summary of the unrelated previous poll though: most players (unsurprisingly) prefer historical realism in vehicles, combined with reasonable balance. Makes sense and that was my choice too. Back to the sound then:

Voiceover

Do you play with sounds on? If so, would you actually like a voiceover done by a famous actor? I am now speaking about the English localisation (I am sure each European country has famous actors of their own, but the other nations probably don't know them). So, which actor could you imagine as the WoT voice?

Music

A new poll is up. What music do you listen to, when you play WoT? Please, vote, comment under this post - and if you want to, add some examples (for example from Youtube) of what you listen to. I am rather curious, what most players listen to. As for the music itself, I am not an expert, sorry - in case I forgot some genre, just write a comment. Oh, and you can vote for more answers than just one.

Personally, I listen to AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Mark Knopfler (the new album is brilliant), Rush (totally addicted to 2112), Czech country and folk music, Irish and Scottish folk and ballads, Bon Jovi (Bon Jovi rocks.... on occasion :) )

  1. I currently use Grandpa's Favorite Sound&Voice mod and NoblePlatoon's Battle Music mod. Both are enjoyable and I daresay help performance to a degree. Voiceovers may be a good direction if done correctly. Would like to see someone dev a competitive-level sound mod soon.

But if this was a perfect world, I'd get younger Donald Sutherland to make a full voiceover in character as Oddball from Kelly's Heroes. Too bad he's old now...

  7. I like the ingame music and the fact that it only comes up at times, not all the time. The voices are terrible though, the order of e.g. critical module damage received is wrong and half of the messages aren't given at all. That should be addressed in the first order, then worry about the voices and stuff.

Oh and for the musik I listen to pretty much everything. form the "Yeah Yeah Yeahs" over "Woodkid" to "Rodney Carington", from there to "Miku Hatsune" and "Luka Megurine", then "Ladytron" + "Sabaton", a bit "Two Door Cinema Club", "Toto", "Peaches" and "CCR". Well, and much more :3

Listening to good music make sing along and that is not rely working well with aiming and such.
Dire Straits, Bruce Springsteen and Queen are good when in the shower, or when not playing WoT.

  14. Mostly Rock 'n' Roll (Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Freddy Cannon and some RnB stuff as well) and a mix of older pop, rock, jazz, and even a couple metal. Plus a few other things like military marches, classical and soundtracks (from things like Command and Conquer, Jeff Wayne's The War Of the Worlds and James Bond films).

  25. I do not care about my crew voices and I do not need actors telling me "We hit them hard" or "Penetration" ;). I had Polish voices only in one battle, hard to get used to, so I use English ones.

I love metal (heavy, trash, death, prog, power and so on), progrock (Pink Floyd, Camel, King Crimson, old Genesis and many more), rock (Queen, Led Zeppelin, and so on) classical music and some gothic. SS, we could together listen to AC/DC, Iron Maiden and M. Knopfler :)

My most favourite band is Swedish Therion (since around 1998, earlier it was King Diamond)

  30. Yep, IMO basically anything from 440 suits well. But I like more instrumental pieces when trying to concentrate on the battle.

PS: Also sometimes the Imperial March or the ill-renowned Panzerlied ring through my headset. But dont take it as I am some nazi-fanboy (maybe nazi-tech-fanboy), these songs just adds to the feeling of being the "bad guy" when rolling over enemy (or being steamrolled :-) in a Tiger II or Panther.

  37. Hi guys! I'm going to post here something about those actors, which made these russian voice packs. They have acted in a lot of movies but almost only in Russia...Some of these movies are interesting. I'll post here only ones that I've seen.

    Andrey Merzlikin:

    Bumer
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0381936/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
    - black commedy

    Brestskaya krepost
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1343703/
    - well made movie...I saw it yesterday...
    - some nice battle scenes with Pz IIIs but not with real ones, unfortunatelly. Is anybody able to recognise the original tanks? :-)

    Aleksandr Baluev:
    1612: Khroniki smutnogo vremeni
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1139085/

This movie is quite diffuclt to understand (lot of characters, historical background...), but it is historically faithful (costumes, weapons...). Interesting is that the film critics rejected it because it has a strong anti polish bias.

What can I say at the end? Well, just judge for yourself if they are good actors... :-)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 1612 is not exactly historically faithful ist it? - with unicorns and stuff? :)
It looked to me as if they still had some cool costumes left over from "Taras Bulba" and weren't so sure wether to make a historical or a fantasy film of it.
But credit where credit is due - 1612 hat the most amazing scene for an "ammorack hit", I've ever come across plus the ambush scne by the bridge over the stream is absolutely fantastic.
Russian filmmakers greatest strength is in details I often think, they are innovative when it comes how to enter a scene and how to get out and they create beautiful pictures. Not seldom it also contains a certain (grim) irony.

      Another example:
Just thinking of the battlefield full of dead people and - something you'd never think about - is, that all the wristwatches of them are still intact and make altogether a disturbing noise ticking thtough the dead silence - thats russian filmmaking.

  38. Either Steve Blum (Spike in Cowboy Bebop, Base Commander in CoH) or Brandon Keener (Garrus Vakarian in ME, Sniper in CoH) would be my pick for an english VO. Love both of their work. Honestly don't care if the VO are famous though, I just want to see good VO actors do nation-specific voices. Don't even care if other nations' crew VOs are not localized; in fact, I might almost prefer if they aren't.

As for music, I'm usually on skype with my platoon so if I'm listening to anything it's usually ambient electronica. On occasion though, I pull up some appropriate tunes on youtube... couple examples:
10 hours of Thomas the Tank engine theme, for general give-no-fucks tanking.
Green Hill Zone theme from Sonic, for when I gotta go fast (ELC, Pz. I Ausf. C, etc).

  41. It depends on, sometimes I play with no music at all, not even the ingame-music to get full focus on the battle and hear all the ricochettes. But when I wanna play more relaxed I go for Rock/Metal-style, In Flames, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Sonic Syndicate but mostly Sabaton with their Art of War, Carolus Rex and other albums that are focused on war, songs like Panzerkampf, Ghost Divison, Cliffs of Gallepolli, Price of a mile and Counterstrike, all songs with lyrics relevant to the game.

    1. In my case it looks somewhat similiar, except I rarely play without music (it happens when album ends). I like in-game soundtrack, most of it I like WoT version of 'Polyushko Polye' (I think that was the name of this track, not sure about spelling).
As for music different than in-game, it's basically metal, I actually prefer oldschool metal, bands like Opeth, Slayer, Bolt Thrower (great war-related lyrics!), Sodom, Overkill, less known are Heathen, Decaying, Onslaught, Artillery (hello to arty players :D). Also other, not as heavy bands like Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Saxon, I also sometimes listen to Sabaton (great lyrics).
I also like to listen classical music sometimes, mostly Wagner.

By the way, anyone has guitar tabs of (some) music in-game? (apart from 'Polyushko Polye') Or anyone can recognise, which 'songs' in-game are 'covers' and post originals? :D

Nirvana, Metalica, Nightwish, Within Temptation, Evanescence, Pink, Prodigy, Linkin Park, Fatboy Slim, Korn, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple

I have ingame music turned off as I really hate the music after lost/won battle.

As for the english actor for voice over. Personally I think there should be voice overs for each nation, but just the accent, so in english version of the game crews of every nation should speak english, but depending on the tank you are in the accent should be different. I don't know which would be the best for other nations but for Germans it NEEDS to be Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Read with a voice of Arnold:
    We lost the track
    We are back in action
    We hit them hard

Ideally, every nation would have 2 sets of voice overs, one in the native language and one in English with an accent and there would be an option in the menu where you could set which voice set each country uses. (I'd have France speak French and the other nations speak English with accents.)

As for music, I just listen to the in-game music, it's pretty good. I did make a music mod back in 0.7.5, but I got tired of updating the mod. It included music from Bulletstorm, Red Alert, Halo and a few other games.

More generally though I listen to EBM and Industrial (Current favourite song, ironically: "T44 - Don't f*** with the USSR"

As for my localized voiceovers I would not object so some "cool" german voiceover-artists of actors - The german voice of Bruce Willis for example is excellent, better than the original :)
And I'd like to see a couple of thinsg fixed. It's just the voiceover I know, but "One more like thsi and they are finished" sounds like taunting me, whenever I just subtracted the first 85 HP from a fresh Tier 9 Heavy with my plucky Centurion.
