An interesting competition...

Source: http://forum.worldoftanks.eu/index.php?/topic/236150-names-those-tanks-win-a-pzb2f-goodies/

Edfrancis001 on EU forums is offering an interesting competition - recognize the tanks and earn a... prize! A B2 bonus code. Now, I have no use for that (I already redeemed one such a code), but I'd like a FTR reader to win this, so let's brainstorm this, alright? :) Some of the vehicles are pretty devious. Pictures are available in the thread. Bold ones are confirmed.

Just from the top of my head:
Number 1 - Marmon-Herrington CTLS
Number 2 - KV-6
Number 3 - Yeramba SPG
Number 4 - Centaur
Number 5 - FV3805 SPG
Number 6 - IS-85
Number 7 - no idea
Number 8 - General Electric GAU-8 DIVAD prototype
Number 9 - Matilda II Frog (flamethrower)
Number 10 - Shinhoto Chi-Ha
Number 11 - Experimental M24 with Sdkfz 8 suspension
Number 12 - SO-76 M18 mod.
Number 13 - Object 140
Number 14 - Object 187
Number 15 - not sure, it's most likely Soviet, the chassis looks like BMP, 152mm gun?

The competition is over

Congratulations to the winner, whoever that is! Correct results, as copied from Ed's post:

The correct answers were as some of your solved/copied
Number 1 - Marmon-Herrington CTLS
Number 2 - KV-6
Number 3 - Yeramba SPG
Number 4 - Centaur
Number 5 - FV3805 SPG
Number 6 - IS-85
Number 7 – Centurion MK 7 submersible tank No 43BA64– found on Otterburn ranges
Number 8 - General Electric GAU-8 DIVAD prototype
Number 9 - Matilda II Frog (flamethrower)
Number 10 - Shinhoto Chi-Ha
Number 11 - Experimental M24 with Sdkfz 8 suspension
Number 12 - SO-76 M18 mod.
Number 13 - Object 140
Number 14 - Object 187
Number 15 – Object 907/2S25 hybrid with mock 130mm gun (however Jedsite are researching this hulk and JANES are also aware, so would have let that one go to the closest answer.)

Personally, while I like difficult competitions, I believe that number 7 was blatantly unfair (the whole competition was favouring people with Commonwealth tank knowledge, but 7 was practically impossible to guess, unless you knew that exact one website with that one picture).
On number 15 not even the author of the competition is sure, making it also quite unfair.

Overall, I believe the competition idea is good, but it does really need some polishing.

  1. Number 8 looks more like a M60A2 "Starship" prototype to me, as it uses the M60 hull.

    2. US Army requirements for DIVAD program were to use the M48 hull because they had a bunch of those laying around. So, in short, it an Avenger gun (the gun from A-10 with that gorgeous BRRRRRRRPPPP sound) on a M48 hull.

14 looks like some sort of T-80.

    1. Or just longer barrel. The muzzle brake looks identical, so does the recoil dampener...

    3. As some of you might have noticed in the original thread, I've been looking through some foreign guns. Not sure where they could have bought it from, though...

Also considered the possibility, that it's A) some kind of tank gun on an SPG mount, and B) a dummy of some sort.

    4. I just ran over ALL sorts of Soviet artillery prototypes based on T-62, T-64, BMP-1, BMP-2 and MLTB. The turret doesn't match anything. Last time I have seen something like this was the turret mounted on the T-62 hull as a 152mm tank destroyer.

Personally, I think it's some sort of mockup. I wonder what Ed thinks it is.

      Delete
    5. I've ran through every single site that posted this picture, and so far the most common answer is 'unnamed 152mm self-proppeled howitzer'. One thing to note, on the original picture there's a sizeable hole in the rear of the lower chassis, which might indicate that the transmission was situated in the rear, quite unlike the bmp1...

I bet SerB planted it there so they have a t10 turreted soviet TD they could implement ;)

      Delete
    6. About mockups: Why would they have built such a thing? To confuse Western intelligence with fake designs or something?

Whatever the gun is, it doesn't look like a "serious" prototype.

      Delete
    7. Any reason really, from movie props to some early prototype variant.

  36. Well its an odd argument, as with any tank that is effectively a hybrid, he's 99% sure, and the man does know his sauce from his condiments on tanks, but with things like that it can be very hard, i don't think event the Russians gave it a true designation. and would have awarded the prize with or without that one in all honesty.

as for the cent, she is a tricky one, but there are other reference to it out there, what i was aiming for was to stop the usual image reversing that was becoming so prevalent and your readers did most the hard work.

if it helps i would like to do some more stuff, and the prize is a roll-over, so an extra 1500 gold will be added next time, if you want to assist or help choose/moderate that would be kinda cool, sup to you though. - ed

  39. ^ it was the small return rollers and a few missing ones, the angled hull, the lack of any additional hatches or features that led to the conclusion, the gun was believed to be a mock due to length/body ratio for the machine..but unknown, 2 ways to get final confirmation, either Jane's.. or one of you might know somebody in Kubinka? but there fairly well know for being a quiet bunch.. i all honesty i might have pulled it of the list yesterday as some doubts were been raised, but sadly i got a 24hr RO from the same moderator who has give me my other 2 warning points.....
