Edfrancis001 on EU forums is offering an interesting competition - recognize the tanks and earn a... prize! A B2 bonus code. Now, I have no use for that (I already redeemed one such a code), but I'd like a FTR reader to win this, so let's brainstorm this, alright? :) Some of the vehicles are pretty devious. Pictures are available in the thread. Bold ones are confirmed.
Just from the top of my head:
Number 1 - Marmon-Herrington CTLS
Number 2 - KV-6
Number 3 - Yeramba SPG
Number 4 - Centaur
Number 5 - FV3805 SPG
Number 6 - IS-85
Number 7 - no idea
Number 8 - General Electric GAU-8 DIVAD prototype
Number 9 - Matilda II Frog (flamethrower)
Number 10 - Shinhoto Chi-Ha
Number 11 - Experimental M24 with Sdkfz 8 suspension
Number 12 - SO-76 M18 mod.
Number 13 - Object 140
Number 14 - Object 187
Number 15 - not sure, it's most likely Soviet, the chassis looks like BMP, 152mm gun?
The competition is over
Congratulations to the winner, whoever that is! Correct results, as copied from Ed's post:
The correct answers were as some of your solved/copied
Number 1 - Marmon-Herrington CTLS
Number 2 - KV-6
Number 3 - Yeramba SPG
Number 4 - Centaur
Number 5 - FV3805 SPG
Number 6 - IS-85
Number 7 – Centurion MK 7 submersible tank No 43BA64– found on Otterburn ranges
Number 8 - General Electric GAU-8 DIVAD prototype
Number 9 - Matilda II Frog (flamethrower)
Number 10 - Shinhoto Chi-Ha
Number 11 - Experimental M24 with Sdkfz 8 suspension
Number 12 - SO-76 M18 mod.
Number 13 - Object 140
Number 14 - Object 187
Number 15 – Object 907/2S25 hybrid with mock 130mm gun (however Jedsite are researching this hulk and JANES are also aware, so would have let that one go to the closest answer.)
Personally, while I like difficult competitions, I believe that number 7 was blatantly unfair (the whole competition was favouring people with Commonwealth tank knowledge, but 7 was practically impossible to guess, unless you knew that exact one website with that one picture).
On number 15 not even the author of the competition is sure, making it also quite unfair.
Overall, I believe the competition idea is good, but it does really need some polishing.

Number 8 looks more like a M60A2 "Starship" prototype to me, as it uses the M60 hull.
ReplyDeleteThe turret looks different...
DeleteUS Army requirements for DIVAD program were to use the M48 hull because they had a bunch of those laying around. So, in short, it an Avenger gun (the gun from A-10 with that gorgeous BRRRRRRRPPPP sound) on a M48 hull.
DeleteYep, already filled that in :)
Delete8 is one of the competitors for the Sergeant York SPAA
Deletefor some reason I think #5 is a centurion BARV.
14 looks like some sort of T-80.
It'snot the BARV, the back looks different
DeleteSS, I have a feeling that it would be a little nasty, but may I use them in that topic? :P
ReplyDeleteYou can do whatever you want with this info :) But some are really nasty.
DeleteWell, I guess that using other ppl knowledge to get free tank and gold is too nasty for me :P
DeleteNumber six looks like an iS
ReplyDeleteYea, it is. Original photo:
Deletehttp://www.flamesofwar.com/Portals/0/all_images/Historical/Soviet/IS-85-01.jpg
Actualised. Bold ones are confirmed.
ReplyDeleteThat Matilda I do believe is a Matilda Frog Variety aka Flame thrower version
ReplyDeleteThat it is. Added.
DeleteThe also think no.4 is not a Cromwell but a Centaur. The road wheels having the ring of smaller holes around the outside is what is making me thing that.
DeleteYes, a Centaur then
DeleteNo.12 might be a Yugoslavian Hellcat on top of a T-55 hull?
DeleteMight explain the modern lorry.
http://oklop2.tripod.com/T-55_M18_BiH.jpg
I'm getting he hang of this.
Yes. SO-76 M18 mod, I think so too
DeleteNo.10 might be a Type 4 Ke-Nu?
DeleteThe hull looks like it might be a thin type 95 Ha-Go with one of the later Type 97 Chi-Ha turrets with the square rear and cupola.
http://www.wwiivehicles.com/japan/tanks-medium/type-97-chi-ha/type-97-chi-ha-05.png
Wrong grill position I think.
DeleteNumber 2 is i beleive a KV-9 - model 1942
ReplyDelete1. Marmon-Herrington CTLS ?
ReplyDeleteGot it :)
Delete11's just an experimental m24 with sdkfz 8 halftrack suspension.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, god, I never thought that existed
DeleteNumber 12 is a mod by the Serbs during the Homeland war in the 90's. I have no idea if it had a designation, but you are right it is the M36 turret with the 90mm fitted onto a T54/55 chassis.
ReplyDelete300 free gold if you change your password on the EU server :) Got to unlock me some of that free EX for the indien panzer grind
ReplyDeleteNumber 10 looks like an Type 3 Medium Tank Chi-Nu.
ReplyDeleteThe engine deck is wrong for chi-nu though...
DeleteNo, Chi-Nu didn't have the rear MG
DeleteI think it's either Shinhoto Chi-Ha or Chi-He
DeleteIt's chi-ha, the chi-he didn't have the side plates below turret bolted on.
DeleteYes, it is...
Delete#14
ReplyDeleteThe turret looks like some t-90. note the frame for the ir-jammer.
http://www7.pic-upload.de/19.04.13/hgtsqj7bny.jpg
you're right SS Number 12 is
ReplyDeleteSamohodno Oruđe 76mm M18 Hellcat "Mod T-55" (SO-76 M-18 Mod)
in game (lol)

Number 13 is Object 140
DeleteNumber 14 is probably Object 187
Yep, got it. Agree on the 187, looks the same
DeleteNumber 2 is probably KV-8 flame thrower tank
DeleteThat kinda occured to me too... but haven't found the photo
Delete2 KV-1 with 122mm.
ReplyDelete5 ummm... Hummel without a gun?
7 Soviet Medium Tank for cetrain... T-44A?
10 Chi Ha?
14 something British.
15 looks Japanese. Heavy and bulky...
All I could muster. Nick as here:)
Definitely not a T-44A. I was thinking Vozilo A, but the front is wrong.
DeleteI think number 2 was KV-8, KV 9 wasn't have any prototype as I remember ^^
DeleteT-90 has wrong rear. T-80 would fit.
ReplyDeletenumber 5 looks like M44 SPG with enclosed superstructure and without gun
ReplyDeleteIt does, doesn't it...
DeleteNo, that engine deck is definitly at the rear of the vehicle, no headlights, just a vertical plate. Also the sprocket doesn't look like something used by americans...
DeleteIt's Object 187
ReplyDeletehttp://topwar.ru/23646-tank-obekt-187.html
http://zapolskikh.livejournal.com/123526.html
14: t80 hull (at least the exhaust looks like it) and now comes the hard bit...turret is welded so it could be a t84 oplot turret... that would explain the Shtora device holders!
ReplyDelete15: i would go for a 2s1 hull with a modified turret but im not sure
NebukadnezarII
i can asure you that there is no MS-1 or Panzer1 on the pictures. some might look like they are but they aren't.
ReplyDelete:)
-KEX
Its a T-80 with the turret facing back. But I dont know the exact modification.
ReplyDeleteNumber 5 looks like the M-52
ReplyDeletehttp://olive-drab.com/idphoto/id_photos_m52_howitzer.php
Only thing is the exhausts are the other way around.
The superstructure looks different
Delete7 Is Soivet. T-34-85 or T-44...
ReplyDelete14: Its supposed to be the Obj. 187
ReplyDeletehttp://zapolskikh.livejournal.com/123526.html
14 is Obj 187 production number 3.
ReplyDeleteNumber 15 is some kind of modification of 2S3 "Akatsiya".
ReplyDeleteTo me 15 kind of looks like the "2S19 Msta-S".
ReplyDeleteMSTA-S is way bigger---
DeleteYes, but the gun is similar. It could be some kind of prototype.
DeleteThe turret looks open topped. My bet would be on some tank destroyer project...
DeleteIMPORTANT
DeleteYou might want to change your password. Go to the portal for details (WG got hacked basically).
Ouch
DeleteRu server had such "events" at least 2 times.
DeleteYeah, the servers are barely holding up. It took me 1-2 mins to load the portal.
DeleteAnd you get 300 gold for the change btw.
No 15 looks rather like some effort to put 122mm D-30 howitzer on BMP derivative chassis ;)
ReplyDelete5's most likely what's remaining of the FV3805 SPG prototype.
ReplyDeleteYes, the superstructure is identical. That's it.
Delete7. IS-1
ReplyDeletedamn. for 7 read 6.
Deletenumber 2 is kv-1 with 122mm gun (maybe some varriant of t150/kv-3), the kv6 was a superheavy tank with 3 turrets and hull made of 2 kv1
ReplyDeleteThe google kv6 is a fake, although the kv6 was simply a downgunned flamethrower tank. I'd rather go with kv9.
DeleteThe 15th is so devious even the damn russians are not sure. My best bet is the 2S18 "Pat-C" upgunned with a 155 howitzer.
ReplyDeleteOr just longer barrel. The muzzle brake looks identical, so does the recoil dampener...
DeleteI'm afraid that muzzle break is not quite the same - in 2S18 B/C case it is a little more extensive. Also carriage is a bit to low for BMP3 derived one. Damn, quite a challenge ;)
DeleteAs some of you might have noticed in the original thread, I've been looking through some foreign guns. Not sure where they could have bought it from, though...
DeleteAlso considered the possibility, that it's A) some kind of tank gun on an SPG mount, and B) a dummy of some sort.
-Rautaa
I just ran over ALL sorts of Soviet artillery prototypes based on T-62, T-64, BMP-1, BMP-2 and MLTB. The turret doesn't match anything. Last time I have seen something like this was the turret mounted on the T-62 hull as a 152mm tank destroyer.
DeletePersonally, I think it's some sort of mockup. I wonder what Ed thinks it is.
I've ran through every single site that posted this picture, and so far the most common answer is 'unnamed 152mm self-proppeled howitzer'. One thing to note, on the original picture there's a sizeable hole in the rear of the lower chassis, which might indicate that the transmission was situated in the rear, quite unlike the bmp1...
DeleteI bet SerB planted it there so they have a t10 turreted soviet TD they could implement ;)
About mockups: Why would they have built such a thing? To confuse Western intelligence with fake designs or something?
DeleteWhatever the gun is, it doesn't look like a "serious" prototype.
Any reason really, from movie props to some early prototype variant.
DeleteMockups, fakes, and dummies; possible idea for a future article?
DeleteHmmm... not a bad idea. Some were quite interesting.
Deleteanother picture of N15 is here
ReplyDeletehttp://i080.radikal.ru/1008/09/9ddaab549750.jpg
Perhaps it is 2s18 Pat-s:
Deletehttp://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/2%D0%A118
Or some other from this family?
I know what number 7 is, and if you think it is russian you are far from the truth, hehehe (it's more european)
ReplyDeleteFor number 15, I think I got a similar model, must be near it, the name is only in russian, might also be in Kubinka.
(I don't tell the names because my friend must win :D)
Number 7 is a PT-76 with turret and 152mm gun?
ReplyDeletelast.not 7.
DeleteWell gents the contest is almost closed, 7 hasnt been answered, and its devious, as for 15, i got the answer from Jim at Jedsite, but not 100% sure and JANES are aslo going to try and email me back.. so for now il go with my the best answer that firts the one i have.... but whoever gets 7 wins the toy - 5 mins -ed
ReplyDeleteEd, why on earth do you put stuff you yourself aren't sure about in competitions? :S
DeleteBlind guess is that 15 is 2s27 but i cant find pics anywhere.
ReplyDeleteEdited the first post for results
ReplyDeleteWell its an odd argument, as with any tank that is effectively a hybrid, he's 99% sure, and the man does know his sauce from his condiments on tanks, but with things like that it can be very hard, i don't think event the Russians gave it a true designation. and would have awarded the prize with or without that one in all honesty.
ReplyDeleteas for the cent, she is a tricky one, but there are other reference to it out there, what i was aiming for was to stop the usual image reversing that was becoming so prevalent and your readers did most the hard work.
if it helps i would like to do some more stuff, and the prize is a roll-over, so an extra 1500 gold will be added next time, if you want to assist or help choose/moderate that would be kinda cool, sup to you though. - ed
Well, I'm banned on the EU forums so not sure how I could help, unless you decide to run the show both here and there. It was a great idea and I enjoyed it much though :)
Deletewell i can post there, and it can be run here as well, off the record, for the record as it were, as most of the answers on the forum were comming from your page anywat :p next time going to spread out a bit, looking up some Cz, Romanian and other more unusual tanks, so if you have any eastern European oddities that would be nice -ed
DeleteI'll write you a PM on the forums then
DeleteNo.15: Am I the only one who sees no similarity to either Object 907 or 2S25?
ReplyDeleteNo, i can't neither.
DeleteIt would be a good topic for a blog post ;) . Maybe picture geolocation, hull and turret comparisons? Where is this wreck IRL?
That's why i was guessing 2s27, but no pics :( .
Gun on No.15 is modified 152mm 2A61 "Pat-B".
ReplyDelete^ it was the small return rollers and a few missing ones, the angled hull, the lack of any additional hatches or features that led to the conclusion, the gun was believed to be a mock due to length/body ratio for the machine..but unknown, 2 ways to get final confirmation, either Jane's.. or one of you might know somebody in Kubinka? but there fairly well know for being a quiet bunch.. i all honesty i might have pulled it of the list yesterday as some doubts were been raised, but sadly i got a 24hr RO from the same moderator who has give me my other 2 warning points.....
