Okay, on more serious note: the US show is great. The_Chieftain is a great guy and despite what he thinks of me (as you can imagine, I am not the most popular person with WG), I respect him a lot (just like Overlord).
This show is just... I don't know. Funny (so are the short weekly newsreels the US server has). I guess I should be grateful for getting my ass banned on the EU server, without that, I'd never have noticed the US forums. I just wonder what's the real difference between the US and EU forums. From what I can tell, they both have their share of decent people and their share of retards, they both have their legends (Garbad, the T110 thread for the US, "professional pro gamerers" and "garage sluts" for the EU).
What I am really missing on the EU server are short newsreels like the US server has. Back in December 2012, Czechout mentioned that there might be a short videoblog series coming, featuring the EU community organizers. Now, I think that's not a bad idea (back then I didn't like it very much because the idea was to make it about the inner World of Tanks EU office works and not about the game), if it focuses on the game itself, can be combined with the community organizer persona. Like this:

That brings me again to another sore spot of the EU forums: the Q&A answer thread. This time it's interesting. As usual, most answers were known in advance, but the AMX 1948 was confirmed (that never happened before!). New upcoming game modes confirmed? Well that's odd... because Storm (or SerB) answered not so long ago there are no such plans. The repair costs for artillery were also said to be rebalanced. E-25 - "soon"? How soon? Not in 8.6 I think. Does that mean that 8.7 will be German tank destroyers? And no Swiss tanks for EU tree? What the HELL? Swiss tanks were mentioned earlier by SerB.
I don't know. Confusing. I'll ask a Russian friend to confirm some of the stuff in the official Russian Q&A thread. Standby.

DeleteI lurked NA a lot, though they recently unlocked Gameplay Discussion temporarily because the servers had problems properly recognising battle counts. And apparently I can keep posting there now \o/
ReplyDeleteI've noticed that on the NA forums, the "unicum league" seems to be more well-recognised. And threads seem to swell up much faster in there (well, EU obviously has more posts in the other language sections...), just look at what happened with the Epic Thread. Not gonna be long before it reaches 4k pages.
And yeah, I'm kinda jealous about some of the stuff NA has.

Well, this is one of the aspects of the US server that bothers me, there seem to be proportionally more elitist twats there, drawn to Garbad. However, it's not so big an issue, some national EU communities have such amounts of mouthy unicums too.

This is one of the strengths of the US forum. The bad players spewing bad advice have been shouted down quite thouroughly in this game. Thus the forums have quite a lot of good advice rather than the crap that flourishes in games where the commnity encourages a wrong opinions are still valid mentality.

Garbad is actually a pretty good person if you leave out artillery and history. Of course, he is a bit CW-centric, but still he gives out usable information.

I agree that the EU server seems to be neglected. We have the worst Q&A with Devs commonly feeding conflicting information and informing us later than other servers about patches and updates. I have noticed the EU website has been down most of the afternoon and that 8.5 Release post was uploaded shortly after i had even downloaded the game. This Server is a mess

The real reasons why US operation is better than EU:
ReplyDelete1. The US still has a work ethic - their employees expect, and are expected, to work hard, for relatively low pay. In France, where the EU operation is run, there are strict limits on the amount of work employees can do and wage rates in Paris are comparatively high.
2. WG has long had ambitions to expand in the US, so even if the WOT customer base has remained rather small, they still run a fairly large operation there. This is now bearing fruit, in the form of recent acquisitions (GPG).
3. The head of the US operation is, I believe, Victor Kislyi's brother, whereas the head of the EU operation is just some random employee.

ReplyDeleteIt's strange to me how lightly moderated the EU forum is. I suspect this is because they have paid moderators with a lot of ground to cover rather than unpaid volunteer/community moderators.

It's brutally moderated if someone mentions the moderators' (lack of) work, and if someone just makes a little fun of WG. But when somebody needs a help... They are nowhere.
DeleteIt's not as obvious as that. People can post promoting competeing products - WT and they don't seem to care. On most other company privided forms I've seen it is common that that is not allowed.

It's not about locking down critisim of WG, it's juist they need to avoid the complaint spam where everyone hits new thread rather than reply.
Problem with the EU staff is the same as the problem with the EU server, instead of just using English as its main language they have to hold everything back, news items, competitions, special announcements etc while every other language out there in Europe is translated for.
ReplyDeleteRussian server just speaks Russian, US server just speaks English, but mainland Europe being what it is, and hating everything English (just see Eurovision results every year) they refuse to just use the worldwide common language. Until a one language policy is adopted by the EU community then things will never get better.
Communication is the key to everything in life, without it you won't get very far.

ATM most of them are sleeping and there's only asians and brazilians on the server right now who dont talk at all. But vietnamese players are quite nice. I once called one a charlie and he TK'ed me xD
